Creating a Team or Inheriting a Team as a Leader:
- Research your team, review files, talk to predecessor.
- Meeting with all and park your preconceived notions about me at the door, I will do the same.
- Give expectations and time line.
- One on one meetings to determine strengths and areas for improvement, goals
- ambition.....everyone is different....recognize their needs.
- Let them know you care....get personal info , where they live, family status, children in sports, elderly care, etc.
- Ensure you have support from above and below (360 review).
- Diverse representation on team.
- Look for skill sets.
- Run the organization together.
- Ensure you have people that think differently on your team.
- Develop, Mentor, and Empower.
Leadership Lessons:
- You will make mistakes in your career and the key is to learn from them.
- Start thinking like a leader earlier in your career by developing relationships internally and externally.
Communication :
- In person where possible.
- Open and honest.
- Handle tough decisions personally and quickly.
- Be available and make sure they know you care.
- Be mindful of non verbal cues. As a leader, you have the ability to change a person's day.
- Mentor, be mentored, and encourage mentoring.
A leader's #1 job is to grow future leaders:
A) Start on your leadership path early in your career.
B) Constantly self-reflect (360 review).
C) Commit to being a life-long learner.
